Healing isn't always about lessening the pain, when someone is grieving to be fully healed the grieving process has to be gone through. The healing is in the acceptance that life has changed and will never be the same again and the space left by the departed person is a void to be filled. Just realising this is extremely painful, but the pain does recede with time and experiences.
Reiki won't encourage the person grieving to bypass the process, the grief pangs will still occur and the realisations that lead to acceptance will still occur, however there will be lifts in confidence levels and improved sleep patterns with regular Reiki treatments.

The grieving process is speeded up, gently and the sufferer is offered many blessings and opportunities to find their way out of the quagmire.

Please remember to imagine or set your intent that reiki is flowing through you from above rather than it being your own energy. If you inadvertently work only from your own field (ok, I know we're all one etc) it can be very draining.
Also I've found that not being 'attached' to the results of your working with the Reiki - 'higher life force' gets better results, i.e. wanting to prove it works seems to slow the healing effect, whereas just 'knowing' that Reiki will bring about improvements is far better, maybe for the reason above, wanting it to work also implies that we assume we know what the best result will be...

The phrase 'Reiki is flowing to .......... for the highest good of all within the realms of divine light and wisdom, so mote it be' is a very useful phrase and implies that the Positive Energy that flows will be to the best value.
The same phrase is excellent when sending Reiki to Earth, countries, peoples, animals or conflict or disaster zones.
